Boston condos

Sometimes you need someone to state the outright obvious in order for something to finally sink in.

In downtown Boston’s case, Jennifer Athas has nailed the outright obvious: Boston’s downtown really has emerged of late into a genuine neighborhood.

One can argue what exactly constitute’s the city’s “downtown.” But if you narrow it to roughly Downtown Crossing, Midtown and parts of the Financial District, then, yes, it’s pretty amazing what’s going on in those areas these days.

The biggest change: New residential and college-dorm buildings are now firmly ensconced downtown — and more residential units have been built and more are on the way. The increased residential component, in turn, has attracted new types of retailers catering to people who actually live in the area, not just shop or work in the area, as Jennifer notes.

Combined with all the nearby office buildings (themselves undergoing rapid change from classic financial-sector offices to more urban-hip tech offices), downtown has become more of a 24/7 place — and the momentum behind it shows no signs of ebbing.
